The EFL Cup, sponsored as the Carabao Cup, is England’s League Cup. All 92 clubs of the Premier League and the three EFL divisions enter, which is why a League Two side can draw a Premier League giant in the early rounds. Every tie is a single match except the two-legged semi-finals, and a tie still level after 90 minutes goes straight to penalties. Only the final at Wembley plays extra time.
First held in 1960-61, when Aston Villa beat Rotherham United over two legs, the competition has changed its name with almost every sponsor since: the Milk Cup, the Littlewoods Cup, the Rumbelows Cup, the Coca-Cola Cup, the Worthington Cup, the Carling Cup and the Capital One Cup all came before Carabao. Liverpool hold the record with 10 titles.
