Twenty20 cricket was built for a single evening. Each side faces 20 overs, the match takes about three hours, and a tie is settled by a Super Over rather than being shared. The first Twenty20 International was played by England and New Zealand’s women in August 2004, with the men’s sides following in February 2005 at Eden Park, where Australia and New Zealand turned out in 1980s retro kit and treated the whole thing as a novelty.

It stopped being a novelty quickly. The ICC extended T20I status to every one of its members in 2018 and 2019, so a match between two associate nations now carries the same standing as one between Test sides. That is why Namibia, Nepal and the United Arab Emirates appear in these markets alongside India and Australia, usually in short bilateral series of three to five matches played back to back at one venue.
