The MTN8 pits the previous season’s top eight Premiership finishers against each other in a straight knockout: quarter-finals seeded by league position (1st against 8th, and so on), two-legged semi-finals, then a single final. It has run every year since 1972, first as the BP Top 8, then the SAA Supa 8 from 2002, before MTN’s sponsorship gave it its current name in 2008.

Its motto, Wafa Wafa (do or die), sums up a format with no group stage and no second chances. Kaizer Chiefs hold the outright record with 15 titles, ahead of Orlando Pirates on 14, the same two clubs whose Soweto Derby headlines the league season itself. Played before the new league campaign begins, the MTN8 traditionally opens South Africa’s football year.
