The UEFA Nations League puts Europe’s national teams into four divisions, League A down to League D, by ranking. Sides play home and away inside small groups, group winners in the lower three leagues move up for the next edition and the bottom sides in the top leagues move down. That turns what used to be a window of friendlies into matches between evenly ranked teams with something riding on them, including routes into Euro and World Cup qualifying.

It was first played in September 2018. The top sides in League A go on to knockout rounds and a Finals tournament the following summer, where two semi-finals, a third-place match and a final decide the title. Portugal won the first edition on home soil in 2019.
